"Notre Dame de Paris", (1924), lithograph, signed and numbered 12/100 by the artist in pencil. Published by Edmund Frapier, Galerie des Peintres-Graveuers, Paris, with the blind stamp lower right. From Maitres et petits maitres d'aujourd'hui, a very fine impression (Fabris 4). Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955) began to paint at the insistence of his mother, Suzanne Valadon; a model of Degas. His early works were influenced by the Impressionists, notably Pissarro. From his beginnings, Utrillo represented scenes of Paris, particularly Montmartre. From 1909 to 1914 he went through his White Period exhibiting for the first time in the Salon d'Automne and had his first one-man show, at Libaude's. In 1928 he was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. His work at its best had the magnificence of a great master, and many of the unpretentious street scenes have a beauty of composition which has rarely been equaled in their kind. This work is in a 27" x 26" hand painted rough limestone textured frame with carved half-medallion pattern, beaded lip with red under painting touched with gold and a matching stone like wood fillet with beaded lip.
