"The Mirror", lithograph in two colors (black over ivory), 1978, 20 1/8" x 16 1/8" on Arches Cover white 27" x 22" paper, numbered 6/125, signed in pencil by the artist, a very good impression.

"The Mirror" extends the vanities theme which is frequently presented in compositions by George Tooker. "The Mirror" displays Tooker's highly refined sense of geometry at its best.  The placement of a table or object in front of a portrait figure to develop pictorial space, a traditional 17th century device, is used to define and limit space.  The mirror held appears as an opaque silhouette against the soft light of the room at the same time that it reflects the light to illuminate the face from a low angle. In "The Mirror" the hauteur of the young woman, her vanity, her desire for beautiful adornment, is directly contrasted with the death's head behind her left shoulder of which she seems happily unaware.  While viewing "The Mirror", amid all the adoration of flesh and beauty, we are  denied a sense of participation with the figure.  Perhaps the presence of the mirror, as a physical barrier, creates an unbridgeable distance.  Or possibly it is the young woman's complete self-involvement, absorbed with her own image, that shuts us out in this steely impression of time stopped.

This Tooker is in a 29" x 33 ¾"  hand-finished Italian silver frame with multiple patinas and multicolored washed raised center panel.  The outer 8-ply Sand and the inner Photo Gray acid and lignin free mats are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO …………. $3900.00.
