"The Tree", (1928), lithograph, edition of 100, 7 7/8" x 11 3/4", pencil signed by artist, lower right, full margins, with watermark, very good and clean impression [Burne-Jones 25].

Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) was born in Tarrytown Heights, New York.  He rejected forms of European modernism in favor of a highly condensed and simplified style.  His wood-engravings and lithographs are generally narrative, symbolic or political.

Rockwell Kent is oftentimes identified with the American Realist School, but his technique displays aspects of the English style of his artistic predecessors.  He was masterly in any graphic medium he undertook.  The tones and lines in his lithography are solidly built and based upon preliminary studies of the subject at hand.  Nothing is vague or accidental in his work; his art is always clear and deliberate.  Kent sought to capture reality while symbolizing the metaphysics of existence.  In the 1920s and 30s he achieved the zenith of his printmaking popularity only to become mired in a political abyss with his affinity for unpopular causes.  Today, Rockwell Kent's work is considered a premiere example of 20th century symbolism and the creative process.

This work is in a  21 7/8" x  25" contemporary frame finished in flat black.  The Khaki linen outer, beveled accent ivory black middle and wash with gray core inner mats are acid and lignin free and are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO …………$1900.00.
