"Backstage," (1950) a wood engraving, 13 5/8" x 11 1/8," is signed in pencil,  titled "Backstage" and dated  (1950) by the artist.  Edition 50. A very good and evenly printed impression.

 "The Clown", drawn and the block cut by Isac Friedlander in 1934, is the basis for this later woodcut, "Backstage".  There was no edition printed of "The Clown" and is a unique image printed by the artist himself (click here to see and compare the earlier work, "The Clown".

Isac Friedlander (1890-1968) was born in Mitau, Latvia.  He studied art at the Academy of Rome.  He was befriended by the Russian writer Maxim Gorky and began his print career in 1917.  In 1929 he emigrated to the United States.  A prolific etcher and wood engraver, his work emphasizes the imagery of his native Riga, the urban spectacle of New York during the Depression and the horror of the Holocaust.  "Backstage" is a fine example of Friedlander's outstanding wood cut imagery

Presented in a 23" x 25 5/8" half rounded and groved Ebony Black frame with mahogany outer edges.  The outer Flannel Gypsum speckled and inner Black rag acid and lignin free mattes are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO …………$1850.00.
