George Tooker (1920 -) resisted making prints despite the increased interest and demand of the late 1960s and early 1970s for such works. In 1977, Tooker created the first of a small group of black-and-white lithographs reiterating themes of his earlier paintings. In his lithographs, Tooker used a direct approach to the imagery, forming strong volumes and contrasts between light and dark, carving the image from the picture plane.
Tooker's earlier oils, "Lovers I" and "Lovers II" were influenced by a poem by W. H. Auden, and represent lovers and landscape appearing to flow together in unity. His lithograph "Lovers" is a remarkably abstract work. The two figures are in a shallow, compressed space where their forms appear almost to occupy the same space. Tooker's remarkable convergence of the lovers and landscape is a vision of love and hope.
Tooker's "Lovers" is framed in a 27 1/8" x 31 1/8" Larson-Juhl "Canaletto" burnished ebony inner panel with inner and outer gilded silver lip frame. The Larson-Juhl "Canaletto"wood fillet echoes the frame. The outer white linen and inner charcoal rag mats are acid and lignin free and are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO ... $2700.00
