"An Old Courtyard, Italy", (1920), color etching and aquatint, 181x130mm; 7 1/8" x 5 1/8", full margins, printed by Frederick Reynolds.  Second state (of 2).  Edition of 100.  Signed, dated, titled and inscribed "II" in pencil, lower margin.  A fine, clean impression [Fletcher 4].

John Taylor Arms (1887-1953) came to full artistic development after years of being an architect.  He had been fascinated since youth by French artists who specialized in architectural nuances, and therefore he studied them, particularly Aime-Edmond Dellemagne.  In Arms' lifetime he was awarded thirty-six prizes for his print making.  His work exemplifies skill draftsmanship, remarkable control of detail and acute vision.

Called the "father of American etching", Arms produced hundreds of etchings of churches and townscapes. "An Old Courtyard, Italy", is a fine example of Arm's exquisite townscape work done as he proceeded to travel throughout England, France, Spain and Italy, drawing and translating his drawings into etchings of timeless beauty.

"An Old Courtyard, Italy" is in a 20 7/8" x 22  3/16" coved frame with natural pieces of inlaid burl, coated distressed edges and layered in a final coat of bees wax..  The bisque colored wood fillet is crackled finished with undertones of brown and sepia orange.  The outer titian gold linen and inner Tuscan brown mats are acid and lignin free and are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO ...... $2,300.00
