"Samskaras", 2002, original acrylic on handmade paper from the Sri Aurobindo Ashram paper factory, 27 1/2" x 22 1/4", signed recto and verso, with deckles on all four sides, original condition.

Clay Anderson (1943- ) is an American artist who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and worked under Ben Kamihira, Walter Stuempfig and Hobson Pittman.  An American Surrealist, he developed his technique and style in Europe after receiving two European traveling scholarships.  His images have been included in many publications, including Omni Magazine.  His works are in many public and private collections including Rutgers University, Temple University and the private collections of John W. Merriam, Terrence McKenna and David Lynch.

Anderson's work delves into the coexistence of beauty and mystery, suggesting a state of reverie.  His distinctive style unsettles and intrigues the observer.  "Samskaras", meaning impressions from the past, is a visual collection of impression Anderson gathered while in India during 2002 and his four previous journeys to that country.  The impressions are primarily sensory and emotive and do not attempt to define any social or political viewpoint.  In "Samskaras", the muted colors and unique juxtaposition of images invoke a dreamlike contemplative state in the viewer.

Anderson's "Samskaras"  is in a 36 1/2"x 41 1/2" frame with an ornate raised lip that is finished with multiple patinas which have been washed with gold and red over a brown base.  The matching wood fillet echoes the frame.  "Samskaras" is float mounted on an inner seurat sand linen mat that is repeated in the outer mat.  Both mats are acid and lignin free and are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO ..... $4500.00
