"Luxemburg Gardens", (1930), lithograph, 10" x 13 1/2 " on a 16" x 11 1/4" sheet, signed, titled and numbered 1/30 by the artist in pencil (Fine & Looney 40).

Benton Spruance (1904-1967) was born in Philadelphia and is primarily known as a lithographer of social, religious and mythological subjects.  Human toil was a focal point in Spruance's artistic expression.  He drew graceful nudes, serious portraits and subjects with fluid motions. 

"Luxemburg Gardens" is a stone lithograph drawn with quick litho crayon marks and simple details.   Near Montparnasse, once famous for its early 20th century artists' colony, are the Luxemburg Gardens which were laid out in the early 17th century for Queen Marie de Medicis. Spruance's multi-generational and maternal "Luxemburg Gardens" captures a  moment which has reoccurred countless times in the nearly four centuries since the Gardens were created.

This Spruance is presented in a 24 5/8"x 22" 12 carat hand-leafed white gold over black Bole and highly burnished frame.  The matching wood fillet is finished with highly polished inner lips.  Both the outer and inner white linen mats are acid and lignin free museum quality with CYRO AR OP-3 UV"..... $1500.00
