Odilon Redon (1840-1916) was born in Bordeaux, France. He demonstrated rapid artistic talent early on studying with Stanislas Gorin, but was undecided, having also studied violin, architecture and contemporary literature. Redon's friendship with Rodolphe Bresdin gained him skills as an engraver and etcher. He studied under Jean-Leon Gerome and learned lithography under Henri Fantin-Latour. It was his experience in the Franco-Prussian War, however, that was the catalyst that directed him into his life of art leading him to be recognized as a major Symbolist. Redon was one of few who transformed literary imagery symbolically into dreamlike images, suggesting indefinite states of mind. He combined late 19th century scientific ideas with the fears of social and racial decadence in France after the Franco-Prussian War. His keen interest in Naturalism and natural forms may be the basis for his inclination towards the use of polymorphous shapes. Redon's graphic works delve into evocative and fantastic themes prefiguring the Surrealist and Dadaist artists. His use of color was a significant contribution to the post-Impressionists and he was admired by the Nabis and Favues, including Matisse. Redon first fame came as a result of his lithographic works. Although an important influence on the evolving schools of art of the period, Redon stands generally apart from any art movement and is focused on the logic of dreams. Many of Redon's works are now in the Musee d'Orsay and the Louvre.
