"Portrait of a Young Woman Wearing a Hat (Miss Seton)" 1902-1903, lithograph on antique cream laid paper, 190x135mm; 7 1/2" x 5", full margins.  Edition size of 17, with the D & C Blauw watermark.. Signed in the stone with butterfly.  Aside from a slight soft handling crease, lower left, a very good, clean impression of a very scarce print [Levy 191; Spink 172].

"Portrait of a Young Woman Wearing a Hat (Miss Seton)", also known as "Dorothy Seton in Hat", was unrecorded by Way. 'Professor Young notes that although the Colnaghi Catalogue dates both this lithograph and "Dorothy Seton" (Levy 192) c. 1900, they should, he argues, be more properly and probably dated as the period 1902-1903. He points out that the Pennells in their "Whistler Journal" (Philadelphia, 1921, pages 286-287) write that Dorothy Seton was Whistler's last model during the period from April 1902 until his death in 1903.  The Pennells also record that Dorothy Seton was sitting for the artist on October 20, 1902'.

Whistler's printmaking began prior to his decision to become an artist.  He had studied drawing at West Point and worked as a topographical artist for the U.S. Coastal Survey in Washington D.C.  It was during this period that Whistler acquired the technical proficiency for his lifelong specialization in graphic works.  His earliest lithographic works (1852) were juvenile efforts, but in 1877, he took up lithography in earnest.   The lithographs, which number approximately 170, are less well known than his etchings, despite his early role in the revival of interest in the medium at the end of the 19th century.

This Whistler lithograph is in a Larson-Juhl 22" x 18 1/4" "Chateau" antiqued silver frame.  The high-quality finish of the "Chateau" frame has been hand-finished in the European tradition of fine water-gilding.  The matching wood fillet echoes the frame.  The outer bone colored hand-wrapped fabric and inner earthen (brownish/green) mats are acid and lignin free and protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO ..........  $3,000.00
