"William Eglinton," etching, 6 1/4" x 4", signed and dated in the title margin lower left, 1885/J.J.Tissot, on laid paper, in excellent condition, Wentworth 84.

James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836-1902) began etching in 1860 with the art form's popular revival, but then stopped after 1861 and did not etch again until 1875.  Between 1875 and 1885, Tissot produced his most significant etchings.  In 1885, Tissot began work on the Bible illustrations that occupied his last years.  About 1895, Tissot made his last print, attempting the difficult process of color etching at which Mary Cassatt was so successful.

William Eglinton (1857 -?) was one of the more widely known mediums of the19th century.  Tissot met Eglinton in Paris in February, 1885, and after a successful seance followed him to London for a prolonged series of materializations.  Eglinton, in his glory, appealed to more than credulous artists:  the Hon. W. E. Gladstone himself was curious enough to attend a seance, to the gratification of spiritualists everywhere and the uncontrolled amusement of Punch.

The  museum quality 16 3/4" x 19" frame of distressed black lacquer with swan backed shaped crown in a carved pattern is highlighted with bronze orange.  The wood fillet is a weathered bronze.  The outer 'Cocoa' Belgium linen mat and inner 'Filbert' colored rag mat are acid and lignin free and are protected with Acrylite-AR OP3 (UV) by CYRO ..SOLD
